O Canada! La Formula 1 returns to a calendar classic after 3 years of absence due to the health crisis. Less than a week after Baku, drivers and teams are flying to North America, heading to the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit for the Canadian Grand Prix (June 17 to 19).

The city of Montreal is hosting the ninth event of the Formula 1 season, for the first time since 2019. This weekend will be the 51st edition of the Canadian Grand Prix and the 41st organized on the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit, opened in 1978. Except in 2009, 2020 and 2021, F1 has always visited the Quebec track since its inauguration.

Semi-urban in nature, around Notre-Dame Island, the circuit is very popular with drivers. Very fast with three straight lines (and three DRS zones), the route is also relatively short (4,361 km), which gives lap times of less than 15 minutes. It can also be very tricky, like the famous “Wall of Champions” at the exit of the last chicane. The best overtaking opportunities are at the Hairpin bend (turn 10), at the entrance to the chicane (turn 13) and at the first corner.

The last Canadian Grand Prix therefore dates back to 2019 and saw the contested victory of Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes). A controversy disrupted the end of the race when the leader Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) had received a 5-second penalty for a dangerous return to the track. The German driver had cut Turn 4 before coming out just in front of Hamilton and pressing him against the wall. Arriving 1st on the track but classified 2nd after application of the penalty, a furious Vettel had exchanged position signs in the parc ferme. An image that has since become iconic.

In 2019, Sebastian Vettel took pole position in 1'10"240, the fastest lap in history on this circuit. The race lap record is owned by Valtteri Bottas with a 1’13″078, still in 2019. Within the grid, 4 drivers have already won the event: Alonso (2006), Hamilton (2007, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019), Vettel (2013, 2018) and Ricciardo (2014). Lewis Hamilton is also the co-record holder of the event with 7 victories in Canada, as is Michael Schumacher.
