Gerhard Berger “I was very sad to learn of Niki's death. I have not only lost a friend, but Austria has lost one of its greatest sportsmen. While the word “legend” is often overused, it is very appropriate for Niki. His successes as a pilot and businessman, combined with his extraordinary personality, made him an international legend. My thoughts are with his family... She has taken great care of him these last few months, at the cost of personal sacrifices. I have had a very close relationship with Niki over the last ten years, both as a pilot, as a business partner and as a friend. He was someone you could always count on. Her attention to detail, her sense of order and her intelligence are things I will always remember... I know very few people who have had as rich a life as Niki. He had great successes in business and in sport and he knew how to find happiness in his private life. He has also gone through the biggest possible setbacks in almost every aspect of his life. He remained pragmatic as we know him so well. Niki Lauda should not be known only for his three titles and his comeback after his serious accident in 1976. He was much more than that..."

Mercedes also released a statement with the reaction of Toto Wolff, boss of the world champion team, of which Niki Lauda was non-executive director.
