Leclerc on pole but frustrated: “The McLarens and Renaults stopped in the middle of the track”

There was no outpouring of joy among Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) at the end of qualifying in Monza (Italy). The fault was the end of the session in rough water, where seven competitors were unable to improve their time having slowed down too much during their exit lap from the pits.

The Monegasque was the only one with Carlos Sainz Jr (McLaren) to step on the gas before the start/finish line. In this chaos, the winner of the Belgian Grand Prix must have forgotten the team instructions.

“The plan was to offer my aspiration Seb (Sebastian Vettel). I came out of the pits in front of him and then there was this big mess at turn 1. The McLaren and Renault stopped in the middle of the track and we had nowhere to go, explains the poleman

Seb overtook me because we knew it was going to be “just right” to cross the line. I stayed behind him until the final straight when I heard on my radio “You can overtake Seb”. But it was too late.

It's a shame but I don't think there was much else I could do. Seb was also capable of taking pole and we obviously didn't want to sacrifice our chances. »

This kind of situation "should not happen", recognizes Charles Leclerc, who believes that most pilots wanted “overtake the slow drivers in front”.
