In the streets he knows like the back of his hand, Charles Leclerc didn't miss his chance. In great shape since the first driving sessions on Friday, the Monegasque made his efforts a reality this Saturday afternoon with a 2e consecutive pole position on home soil where he was simply intractable.

On a very fast pace, Charles Leclerc immediately climbed to the top of the Q3 timesheet with a lap of 1'11"376 which gave him a little more than 2 tenths ahead of his closest pursuer. , Carlos Sainz. While improving in his last attempt, the local of the event was forced to ease the throttle after Sergio Pérez's accident at the entrance to the tunnel causing a red flag. Regardless, the pilot Ferrari had already done the hard part.

« It's very special, he admitted when making an initial assessment of his qualifications. I am extremely happy. It’s been a really good weekend so far. The car had the speed, I just had to do the job. Everything went perfectly. My last attempt before the red flag was very good »

Setting out to beat his own mark and achieve an impressive lap, Charles Leclerc was forced to slow down the neutralization of the session following the exit of his counterpart from Red Bull which caused a traffic jam before the tunnel.

« I was at the limit, admits the poleman of the weekend. I had a bit of oversteer and struggled to get the tires in the right temperature window in the last sector because there was a bit of traffic. In the end, the rear gave way a little but my lap time was good. I was improving. I think I was 4 tenths faster before I stopped running. The car was amazing and it's great to be able to have Carlos (Sainz) on the front line with me."

With pole position in his pocket, Charles Leclerc is now turning to the sky since rain could appear in the Principality this Sunday. Nothing very worrying for the man from the Rock, ready to fight under all conditions. “ The forecast leans more towards dry weather but I think we are competitive regardless of the weather."
