It's difficult to settle for fifth place on the grid when you're driving for Ferrari. However, Charles Leclerc would certainly have signed for a third row, Friday evening after Free Practice. In difficulty during the first sessions of the weekend on the Barcelona track, the Monegasque managed to find good settings to get closer to the fastest… but that was not enough to fight for pole this Saturday.

The winner of the Monaco Grand Prix was relegated a good distance from the leading duo, Lando Norris et Max Verstappen, but was also beaten by both Mercedes in the exercise of qualifications. Charles Leclerc, however, got the better of his teammate in Q3, while Carlos Sanz was more efficient during Free Practice. A small consolation for the Monegasque, who does not really know what to expect in terms of the race with his new settings.

Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), 5th in qualifying in Spain : “Disappointed… well, shared. On the one hand, I'm quite proud of the work we did during the night because yesterday was really very difficult. But I remain very disappointed with today's performance because we are more than three tenths behind Norris with the McLaren, we are far from Verstappen too. It's not crazy, especially since we often say that Barcelona is quite representative for the rest of the season. It's not what we were looking for today, now we have to try to maximize the weekend from [Sunday] and still achieve big points. »

“I flipped [the settings of] the car today, so yesterday's race pace is not very representative because I will be in a completely different configuration tomorrow. I arrive confident for tomorrow's race because we made good adjustments and I felt better today. Afterwards, getting Norris and Verstappen, I think it will be complicated, but we have a race to play against the Mercedes. »
