Audiences are still growing in F1

Liberty Media seems satisfied with the results obtained for the 2019 season. Mercedes still dominates the championship with Lewis Hamilton, F1 manages to progress with increasing audiences for the 3rd consecutive year.

The global television audience reached 1,922 billion viewers, the highest level since 2012 (with one more Gand Prix last year). This represents an increase of 9% year-on-year.

“It is particularly satisfying to have these results in a world where the media offering is constantly multiplying, welcomes Ian Holmes, director of media rights. I think these numbers can be explained by many factors, both on and off the track. The competition was more competitive overall in 2019, there were more stories to tell and exciting new drivers to support. »

“We also looked to improve TV coverage with new graphics powered by AWS, different camera angles… Our efforts off the track have also paid off with the introduction of Fan Festivals, development of esports or even the success of the Netflix series “Drive to survive”. We reach more people on more platforms », adds Ian Holmes.

The five largest markets are once again Brazil, Germany, Italy, Great Britain and the Netherlands. Among the 20 largest markets, Poland saw an exceptional increase of +256% following the return of Robert Kubica (not reappointed to Williams This year). Greece is at +75%, the Netherlands at +56%, Italy at +29% and Germany at +23%. The major markets targeted by Liberty Media also had positive results with the USA at +7% and China at +5%.

On the other hand, a slight decline was noted in the number of unique viewers (471 million) with a decrease of -3,9%.

It was the Italian GP at Monza which was the most watched with 112 million viewers, a first since the 2016 Mexican GP. Three races exceeded the 100 million viewer mark: Monaco, Brazil and Germany. 14 events exceeded the 90 million stage with an average audience of 91,5 million.

F1 also noted rising statistics across media platforms with an increase of almost 33% on social media.
