Changes planned by the FIA for 2017

The FIA World Council unveiled several changes to the regulations for the 28 season this Wednesday, September 2017. Apart from the new technical regulations which will increase the performance of single-seaters, several points were studied by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile.

Standing starts in the rain

From 2017, if a safety car is sent to the track at the start of a Grand Prix due to rainy weather, a standing start will be carried out when conditions are deemed safe.

Limitation of Power Unit changes

After seeing Mercedes F1 line up three different Power Units for testing for the Belgian Grand Prix on the W07 Hybrid of Lewis Hamilton, the FIA has taken steps to prevent a driver from finding themselves at an advantage by being able to use these engines for the remainder of the season without receiving a penalty. From next year, only the last element installed can be used in the following events without a sanction being imposed.

Tire choice

The tire selection procedure will be different for the first five Grands Prix of the season. Teams will no longer have to give their choices, with Pirelli providing two sets of the hardest tires, two sets of medium compounds and seven sets of the softest tires in its range to each car.

Helmets

Drivers will no longer be allowed to use more than one helmet decoration per season, except for a specific event such as a national Grand Prix for example.

The FIA also revealed the new provisional calendar for the 2017 season.
