The teams welcome a good starting point for 2021

La F1 presented the bases of its future technical regulations for 2021 by unveiling in particular a first glimpse of the look of the single-seaters. The communication remained vague on the details, in particular on the mechanical part, simply confirming that the 6l turbo/hybrid V1.6 would be retained.

The team managers are delighted with the success of these changes even if they admit that the regulations still need to be refined.

« Ferrari being part of the World Council, we voted in favor, confirmed Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto. We believe that this is the right time for this change and we know that the system must be sustainable... There is still work to be done... We are still at the starting point and we must work together to make progress on this regulation which must be further improved. We need to think about certain points like the Power Unit or gasoline, see what can be done. It is a collective responsibility. »

The regulation also plans to finally put into force cost controls with a limit of 175 million dollars per team (or approximately 157 million euros) and heavy penalties for non-compliance with this rule. Except that the wealthiest teams will be able to anticipate this limit by doubling their efforts before this rule is put in place.

“For teams like us, like Alfa (Romeo) or Haas, we operate with significantly lower budgets than the rest of the grid, Claire recalled Williams, the director of the stable of the same name. It’s a very complicated area of work to set up, but I would say it’s a lesser evil. We have tried with the Strategy Group to bring this cost control into effect earlier so that the bigger teams cannot spend their money that they are so concerned about next year. That would clearly have been an advantage. It’s a really difficult situation, but it’s still moving in the right direction for structures like ours which are totally independent. »

Future F1 cars will notably have fewer aero appendages with the return of ground effect in order to have more fights on the track.
