Teams reach agreement with FIA

After weeks of bitter discussions between the teams of Formula 1 members of FOTA (the team association) and the FIA, the two parties finally managed to reach an agreement. While a favorable outcome seemed increasingly difficult to envisage, Max Mosley announced the news at the end of the meeting held Wednesday morning at the FIA headquarters, Place de la Concorde in Paris.

« There will be no separation but there will be a single championship in 2010. We have reached an agreement on cost reduction He said.

The rules of the 2010 championship will be based on those of the 2009 season. In the agreement reached, the teams then committed to reducing costs to return to those in force at the beginning of the 90s. The manufacturers also agreed to assist new entrants in 2010 by providing them with technical assistance. An object of contention, governance will also be modernized. The teams will comply with a modernized version of the governance of the discipline based on the Concorde Agreements of 1998. The FIA will nevertheless retain control over F1.

Max Mosley also feared that teams would withdraw without warning, as was the case with Honda at the end of last season. To avoid this, the teams have agreed to commit until 2012 and will extend their commitment before the end of this period after having renegotiated an agreement.

Finally Max Mosley announced that he will not run for a new term next October. The FIA president no longer had any reason to hang on to his post now that a compromise had been found.

The list of teams selected has finally been confirmed for the 2010 season. These are the eight member teams of FOTA (Ferrari, McLaren, BMW, Renault, Toyota, Brawn, Toro Rosso et Red Bull) as well as Williams and Force India and the three incoming teams (Manor, USF1 and Campos).
