The World Council held in Paris this Wednesday, December 15 allowed the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) to validate the worksheet concerning the regulations for motors Formula 1 for the 2026 season.

Fans of big cars of yesteryear may be disappointed when they learn that F1 will preserve the “small” 6 liter V1,6. The engines, sorry, the power units as they have been called since the technical revolution of 2014, will see their electric power increase to 350 kW. More, the MGU-H (exhaust gas energy recovery system) will be completely eliminated!

In addition, a cost cap will be introduced for power units, in the same vein as the “cost cap” ratified in the budget of each team since the 2021 season.

The FIA wants to be reassuring. This regulation must make it possible to fulfill several objectives, including the protection of the spectacle, through the notions of “power and high revs, sound, performance of the car, ability of the drivers to race” as well as the end of “excessive deviations” performance between the teams.

The economic aspect is also essential, the press release reporting a “significant cost reduction: technical, operational and financial”. Ecology is not forgotten, with “a totally sustainable fuel” and a more pronounced orientation towards “electrical energy”.

Finally, and this is not trivial in a context where the Volkswagen group, via Porsche and Audi, is expected to enter the sport, the FIA wants this regulation to allow “newcomers to join the discipline at a competitive level”.

MGU-H (exhaust gas energy recovery) removed, OK if this improves sound without restricting performance while operating with e-fuels and attracting new players!
