Faced with the reluctance of the majority of engine manufacturers, Ferrari in the lead, the Commission F1 decided.
The new engine regulations, planned for 2013, were postponed for a year and the 1,6-liter turbo units, initially planned to replace the current 8-liter naturally aspirated V2.4s, were abandoned.
Instead, a compromise was found around a 6-liter turbocharged V1,6 engine.
To be in line with the new environmental policy desired by the FIA, hybrid technology is continued with the Srec (Kinetic Energy Recovery System).
This change in regulations, decided by the F1 Commission, will have to be submitted to the vote of the FIA World Council next Monday.
Its adoption is expected to be no more than a formality, with F1's commercial manager, Bernie Ecclestone, who sits on both the F1 Commission and the World Council, favoring a postponement of the new regulations.
Renault, which initially fiercely defended the introduction of the four-cylinder turbo, therefore finally revised its position.
