The least we can say is that this Australian Grand Prix was marked by accidents from the very beginning. Isack Hadjar, Jack Doohan, Carlos Sainz…It was the latter who was particularly noticed, while the first two could be affected by inexperience and perhaps the pressure of riding in such tricky conditions.

The Madrilenian's crash came in the final corner while the field was under Safety Car after Jack Doohan's accident a few moments earlier. It was surprising for such an experienced driver, especially given the way it unfolded, as the driver Williams simply lost control of his FW47 at low speed, almost looking like a rookie for a few seconds.

So how can we explain such an incident? Did Carlos Sainz make a mistake? Did the Williams encounter a technical problem that resulted in this excursion?

« This shouldn't happen, explained the Hispanic. This is a situation that should never happen, I don't understand. It was a gear that jumped and then caused the accident. »

A “defense” supported by his team principal James Vowles who went into a little more detail confirming that the team had got to the origin of the incident. It was a simple gear change at a very difficult moment, on a slippery track, that allowed the car to regain a little more power and torque than we expected., he adds. These are tiny margins, but we have to make sure that as a team we provide a stable base for all our drivers in all circumstances. »

Ah, the whims of electronics, at least it's not the fault of the gravel!

Vowles' explanations are a bit vague... if I understand what he's saying correctly, it's not "a gear that jumped", but Sainz who was downgraded...
