The first session of the weekend started half an hour late due to tropical rain hitting the Sepang circuit. As usual with Pirelli tires, once the rain stops, the drivers favor intermediate tires rather than rain tires.
After an hour of green flag, it’s Max Verstappen (Red Bull) who achieved the best time in 1’48”962. He is seven tenths ahead of his teammate Daniel Ricciardo. Only released at the end of the session for a quick tour, Fernando Alonso (McLaren) set the third time at 1”6 from the reference.
The Ferrari by Kimi Räikkönen and Sebastian Vettel then move ahead in the ranking Mercedes de Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, relegated to three seconds behind the Dutchman. Lance stroll place Williams in 8. e place in front Pierre gasly (Toro Rosso) which signs a 9e time as the first mark in the official session.
Sergey Sirotkin (Renault) is 10e instead of Nico Hulkenberg and ahead of Jolyon Palmer (Renault). Stoffel Vandoorne (McLaren) signs on 12e time ahead Esteban Or with (Force India) and Sean Gelael (Toro Rosso) who took the place of Carlos Sainz in EL1. Sergio Pérez (Force India) remains in 15e instead.
Charles Leclerc, for his first EL1 session of the year with Sauber, ahead of his teammate Pascal Wehrlein, who made an error on his fast lap. THE Haas de Romain Grosjean and Antonio Giovinazzi complete the timed classification since Felipe Massa (Williams) only completed 3 laps without establishing a mark.
