Lewis Hamilton on pole position at Silverstone

67th career pole position, one point shy of the record Michael Schumacher, 5th pole in the exercise in Great Britain, equaling Jim Clark's record: this Saturday afternoon in England could not be more beautiful for Lewis Hamilton in front of his audience.

The pilot Mercedes initially braved the elements in Q1, before mastering the last part of the session to take a new pole position, which however remains provisional, following an investigation carried out for possible embarrassment of the Briton on the Haas de Romain Grosjean.

Author of a new record for the current Silverstone track in 1'26 "600, Hamilton is more than five tenths ahead of Ferrari by Kimi Räikkönen, the largest margin between first and second place in qualifying this year.

The Finn showed himself more to his advantage than his teammate Sebastian Vettel, third in the session ahead Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes). The Finn will, however, have to drop back to ninth position, after his five-place penalty for changing the gearbox.

Or with and Grosjean in Q3

Behind this quartet, Max Verstappen saved the furniture in the Red Bull clan, with a fifth time, transformed into second row with Valtteri Bottas' penalty. A consolation in the clan of Milton Keynes, because if Daniel Ricciardo, on a track made tricky by the arrival of the rain in Q1, had taken control of this first part of the session, the Australian was forced to stop at the side of the track, visibly slowed down by a mechanical problem, potentially of turbo.

Verstappen will precede Nico Hulkenberg (Renault), author of a very good session with the RS 17, the German being followed by the two Force Indias, Sergio Pérez taking the advantage in these qualifications over Esteban Ocon. The Frenchman will leave alongside the McLaren MCL32 of Stoffel Vandoorne, who managed to beat his teammate for the first time this year Fernando Alonso.

Valtteri Bottas and Romain Grosjean (Haas) will share the fifth line. Jolyon Palmer (Renault) follows in eleventh position ahead of the first Toro Rosso of Daniil Kvyat and the Spaniards Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz (Rosso Bull).

At home and for the celebration of 40 years of Williams en F1, Felipe Massa and Lance stroll did not shine, the Brazilian managing to advance to Q2, unlike the young Canadian, 16th. Kevin Magnussen (Haas), the Saubers of Pascal Wehrlein and Marcus Ericsson and the Red Bull of the unfortunate Daniel Ricciardo bring up the rear.

The British Grand Prix will begin tomorrow at 14 p.m. and will be followed live with commentary on our website.
