Lewis Hamilton happy to have rectified the situation

Second on the starting grid, Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) did not have an ideal start to the race, far from it. If he achieved a correct takeoff without being threatening to his teammate and pole sitter Valtteri Bottas, the reigning champion was especially surprised by Max Verstappen (Red Bull) on the restart (7th round).

Falling back to 3rd, the Briton then activated “champion” mode. Enraged, he went to depose Max Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas in turns to take the reins of the Grand Prix. The rest was just a long, quiet river for him as he left the Portugal with a 97th career victory.

« It was a difficult race whether mentally or physically, he whispered tiredly before going onto the podium. You had to stay fully focused. There was a lot of wind. It was easy to make a small mistake ».

Once in the tough, Lewis Hamilton woke up and then left his rivals no chance. “ I didn't manage to get a start as good as Valtteri's (Bottas) then I lost a place at the restart which was not good. I wasn't really happy. I had to get back into it to get back into the race.

Max (Steps) made a small mistake which put me back in and allowed me to overtake him. Then with Valtteri (Bottas), I knew I had to try to pass before my tires were destroyed and it went well ».

With an 8-point lead in the championship over Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton is giving himself a few days of “ recuperation » at home before turning to the Spanish Grand Prix scheduled for next Sunday.
