Lewis Hamilton takes pole in Spain

Beaten by his teammate Nico Rosberg during the last free practice session this morning in Barcelona, Lewis Hamilton went all out in qualifying to take pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix.

Author of a masterful final lap, the Briton signed the best lap in 1'22″000 and is ahead of his teammate by almost three tenths. This is the 52nd career pole position for the driver Mercedes.

Behind the two W07 Hybrids, we logically expected the two Ferrari de Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen, but the SF16-H could not keep up with the Silver Arrows and were also dominated by the Red Bull RB12 Daniel Ricciardo et Max Verstappen, the Australian ahead of his Dutch teammate at the very end of Q3 on his only attempt, who did not miss his debut in the exercise with his new team.

Räikkönen and Vettel will share the third row, being relegated to more than a second behind Hamilton. Valtteri Bottas (Williams) takes 7th place ahead Carlos Sainz (Toro Rosso). Sergio Pérez (Force India) and Fernando Alonso (McLaren) complete the top 10.

Nico Hulkenberg (Force India) fails at the gates of the top 10 and precedes Jenson Button (McLaren) and Daniil Kvyat (Toro Rosso), largely dominated by his teammate Sainz. Romain Grosjean (Haas) will start from 14th position in front of the first Renault RS 16 Kevin Magnussen. Followed by Esteban Gutiérrez (Haas), Jolyon Palmer (Renault) and Felipe Massa (Williams), surprisingly eliminated in Q1. The Saubers of Ericsson and Nasr and the Manors of Haryanto and Wehrlein bring up the rear.

The Spanish Grand Prix will begin at 14 p.m. tomorrow, and will be followed live on Canal + and via our live commentary on our website. Photos of the event can be viewed via our dedicated gallery.
