Liam Lawson doesn't want to put the cart before the horse. If everyone sends him either to Red Bull, either at Racing Bulls in 2025, the New Zealander is looking to calm things down and temper expectations. With two Grands Prix remaining in the season, the Kiwi is still looking to prove his worth to Helmut Marko and the Red Bull clan to secure his place in Formula 1 next season.
Convincing since his return to the wheel of the Racing Bulls in Austin, replacing Daniel Ricciardo, the 22-year-old driver knows that things can go very quickly, and in both directions, within the Red Bull family. "I'm very focused on the races I'm doing, said Liam Lawson ahead of the Qatar GP. I know I'm being evaluated on these races. I don't know where I'll be next year, if I'll still be in this sport. Obviously, I'd like to think that's the case, but until I get that confirmation, I'm focused on these races."
Lawson in limbo until official announcement
Since his return and over these last four performances, Liam Lawson has scored points twice, with a total of four points on the counter. A score that is not ridiculous but which is lower than that of Yuki tsunoda (8 points over the last four weekends), his teammate and direct opponent for a potential seat at Red Bull in 2025. However, in Las Vegas, the New Zealander had a complicated race, finishing in 16th place, while the Japanese finished in the points.
"Overall it's been pretty good at most races. Obviously I can't have two weekends like Las Vegas in the last two [Grands Prix], recognizes the Kiwi. We're in a good position. As for what I'll do next year, I don't know. I don't know and there won't be a decision on that until the end of the season." Even though he seems assured of having his place next year, Liam Lawson will still not have the right to make a mistake between now and the end of the championship.
The 22-year-old driver faces serious competition for the last seat in 2025, both internally with Yuki Tsunoda and Isack Hadjar, and externally with the Franco Colapinto rumour still persisting in the paddock. If the New Zealander manages to score new points in Qatar and/or Abu Dhabi and takes Racing Bulls up to 6th place in the Constructors' Championship (four points behind Haas, currently 6th), his place in Formula 1 next year would then be almost assured.
