Liam Lawson didn't expect to be demoted to Racing Bulls

It was during an event organized by Red Bull It was on the streets of Tokyo this Wednesday, April 1, 2025, that Liam Lawson returned for the first time to the abrupt end of his adventure with the Austrian team. It was really a shock, honestly, confesses the New Zealander in this interview given to Sky Sports. It's not something I saw coming. »

« The discussions we had also didn't really go in that direction, so it was definitely not something I expected.", adds the man who will be wearing the Racing Bulls colours at the Japanese Grand Prix this weekend.

This relegation to the sister team sounds like a disavowal of Lawson, who sees Yuki tsunoda to do the opposite, having been preferred to the Japanese driver during the winter to replace Sergio Pérez. Even if his first two Grands Prix were not at all up to scratch (best qualifying place 18th, no points scored), the main driver would have liked to have more time to get used to the very particular behavior of the RB21, especially since this weekend he returns to Suzuka, a circuit he knows well since his Super Formula season in 2023 (vice-champion), unlike Albert Park in Melbourne and the Shanghai International Circuit, two tracks unknown to him before this season.

“I obviously would have liked more time,” admits the Kiwi. “I felt like with more time, especially going to places I’d been to before… The beginning was tough. Testing was tough. The first weekend in Melbourne was tough as well. And then, obviously, China was a Sprint. Going back to tracks I’ve been to before, with the car being so tough, would have helped me and I would have loved the opportunity, but obviously, it’s not up to me, so I’m here to make the most of it.”

Free Practice 1 of the Japanese Grand Prix will begin at 4:30 a.m. French time on Friday.

Having been in the Red Bull line for a few years, the Kiwi has seen what has happened to others in the past! He shouldn't be entirely surprised, even if he certainly didn't expect to become the holder of the shortest stay in a Red Bull seat... unless Tsunoda only does the Japanese GP! You never know with Red Bull, who never do like the other teams, even if Alpine seems to be getting closer to it

It must be admitted that the conditions were the worst: dreadful weather in Australia that trapped many others besides him, and only one test session in China on a circuit unknown to him. The results were certainly catastrophic, but seeing him in normal conditions on circuits he knows would have allowed us to learn a little more about his ability to get more out of the car. There was as much lack of thought in the decision to promote him too quickly as in the decision to relegate him. I also hope that RB remains an isolated case and that if Verstappen were to leave, the team would drop in the standings, that management would stop the costs. This is a team that no one would miss in F1.

Very naive, Lawson. And what about autohebdo, which has become the advertising pages of the ORECA store.

They couldn't even do a proper copy/paste... An entire paragraph ends up in the middle of the article, two others are repeated, frankly it sucks. Not to mention the spelling and French mistakes that are as regular on the site as they are in the paid magazine. Should we contact Romain Bernard to teach AutoHebdo employees how to proofread?
