It's hard to say that Liam Lawson is a total rookie at the Japanese Grand Prix. Demoted to Racing Bulls due to his poor results at Red Bull, the Kiwi has driven more for the sister team than for his own. Milton Keynes during his career, at a rate of 11 Grand Prix against 2.

Following the first day of testing at the Suzuka circuit, the closed and cold face that he had been able to show since the start of the 2025 season evaporated in favor of an enthusiastic smile. It was a good day, said the New Zealand pilot. It was nice to drive, I'm happy to be back at Suzuka." Indeed, it is not the first time that the Racing Bulls driver has been to Japan since he competed in SuperFormula, finishing 2023nd in the championship in 2.

After starting 13th, Liam Lawson found his rhythm in the second session of the day, running on par with his teammate Isack Hadjar at the end of the day, and was satisfied with his overall performance. It's a really cool track. Thanks to the resurfacing, sector 1 is even faster, it really feels like you're getting your head ripped off, which is really exciting. confided the 23-year-old pilot. But overall, it was a good day. Obviously, tomorrow (SATURDAY) will be more important."

When asked about the much-discussed topic of the difference between the VCARB-02 and the RB21, Liam Lawson confessed: " CIt's really different, it's not the same driving feeling ", without going into technical details. Happy with his new start, he is aiming for a result on Saturday in qualifying after suffering a setback in the first two rounds. I think that the operating window that we have (with Isack) is really very good. The car has been fast since the start of the season. I hope to repeat that in qualifying."

The final free practice session will take place on Saturday at 4:30 a.m. (French time) and qualifying will follow at 8:00 a.m. Liam Lawson must surely be dreaming of qualifying ahead of his former teammate, Yuki tsunoda, promoted to Red Bull at his expense…

The pieces of the puzzle are falling into place: Lawson isn't bad, the RB21 is just very difficult to drive. Tsunoda did well in FP1 (but probably no one was really pushing) but fell behind in FP2. The Racing Bulls are currently practically level with the RBs, with Hadjar even ahead! We can count on Verstappen to pull off a lap that will put him well on the grid, but he's reached the point where he's spitting in his hands to compensate for the machine's weaknesses. A negative evolution for which he may well be responsible.
