Gérard Lopez believes that the current organization chart of the stables F1 no longer requires having a Team Principal position.
The former owner of Lotus F1 Team, now a minority shareholder of Renault Sport F1 Team following the takeover of the Enstone team by the manufacturer at Losange, sees the French structure being formed with different directors entrusted to key positions: Cyril Abiteboul has been appointed general manager, Frédéric Vasseur is competition director while Jérôme Stoll is president of Renault Sport F1.
“I wouldn't say it's something of the past, but F1 is a bit different today. It takes different hats for people to be in charge of different things”, commented the Luxembourg businessman to Reuters agency. “I remember the time when I started following F1. A Team Principal had to take care of management, take calls, take care of strategies, attract sponsors, recruit drivers… It is now the job of five people in a modern team. »
