Madrid formalizes its candidacy to organize a Grand Prix

Madrid has confirmed its intention to host an F1 Grand Prix in the future.

Madrid is indeed a candidate for the organization of a Grand Prix of Formula 1. As announced by El Confidencial, and which AUTOhebdo echoed, the Community of Madrid sent a letter of intent to Stefano Domenicali, president of the F1 Group, signifying its interest in hosting a Grand Prix. In it, Enrique Lopez Lopez, member of the Community of Madrid, underlined the Spanish capital's desire to host F1 as well as the habit acquired by the Castilian metropolis of hosting leading sporting events. “ We are ready to work with you and your team to bring Formula 1 to Madrid“, the letter states.

The letter from the Community of Madrid: “ Dear Mr. Domenicali, it is with pleasure that I write to you on behalf of the Government of the Community of Madrid to express our interest in the development of an F1 Grand Prix in Madrid. As you may know, the Madrid region is experiencing exceptional economic and social development across Spain and Europe. We welcome an ever-increasing number of visitors from all over the world and sports competitions are becoming more and more prestigious and popular in the Community of Madrid. We have a developed and efficient transport network, our climate is pleasant. We offer first-class tourist, cultural and gastronomic attractions. Our hotel infrastructure is excellent and our cosmopolitan commercial offering enjoys unique freedom in terms of opening hours. Most importantly, Madrilenians are immensely open and welcoming to visitors. I believe that organizing a car race in Madrid, the most stimulating sporting experience of our era, would be a success for all professionals, institutions and companies involved in the development of F1. This would, of course, be a source of satisfaction for the entire region and its citizens. This is why the Government of the Community of Madrid has a great interest in making this project possible. In short, I would like to confirm our commitment to you and this project, as well as our willingness to sign the appropriate agreements in order to promote this race and offer a great spectacle of sport and entertainment. We are ready to work with you and your team to bring Formula 1 to Madrid. Sincerely.«

The community of Madrid does not indicate, however, where this possible Grand Prix would take place. According to El Confidencial, it is unlikely that an urban route will be chosen. The choice could fall on the Jarama circuit or on an enclosure not yet built, possibly in the neighboring town of Morata de Tajuna. However, there is a significant obstacle to Madrid's ambitions. The Barcelona-Catalunya circuit has been extended to the F1 calendar until 2026. Will Stefano Domenicali be convinced?
