Hero of qualifying Friday, Kevin Magnussen made one of his dreams come true Formula 1 : start from pole position. A unique moment for Haas and the Dane who started in the lead during the Sprint race in São Paulo. Leading a pack on the lookout, with big names like Max Verstappen and George Russell, “K-Mag” managed to hold onto the race lead for two laps, before finally giving in to cars faster than VF-22.

Eighth at the finish, Magnussen was delighted with his performance, which brought his team a point and which ideally positions him for the Grand Prix. “In any case, it was unrealistic to want to keep the others behind and I didn't even want to try, said the ex-pilot Renault at the end of the Sprint race. I knew the battle was going to be around P7, P8, which turned out to be right, and I didn't want to waste time by getting overtaken. I also had to take care of my tires etc. »

“It’s been a good weekend so far” says Magnussen

The Haas driver experienced for the first time all the procedures and obligations for the author of the pole position, such as grid setting for example. Although Kevin Magnussen enjoyed leading the Sprint race, unfortunately he did not have a very exciting race according to him. “It was a bit of a boring phase of the race. I knew it was going to happen after the start, that these cars would get ahead, relativizes the Dane, despite everything happy with his 8th place with a smile that has not left him since Friday. I'm really happy to have a point, you know, I can't believe what happened yesterday, and you know, I got a point today, so, so far, it was a good weekend. » Thanks to this point, Haas takes two steps ahead of Alpha Tauri in the battle for 8th place among manufacturers.

Magnussen will therefore start from the 4th row, alongside Carlos Sainz for the São Paulo Grand Prix. When asked what he can expect from the race, he replies: “ I don't know, Seb [Hag] was faster than me of course, but I don't know. I have to see how his stint went because I was overtaken several times during the race and that affects tire degradation. Tomorrow I hope we will be in a better position to stay where we are and manage the tires. ".
