Martin Whitmarsh would have liked a V6

The debate is endless between engine manufacturers and the FIA. Renault defends the introduction of the four-cylinder while Ferrari is formally against it, just like Bernie Ecclestone. In the midst of the dispute, Cosworth and Mercedes are undecided.

The main reservations concern the characteristic noise of the engines, which are likely to be much less impressive with the reduction in displacement. Martin Whitmarsh, however, seems to have a solution. “We need engines that deliver exceptional sound, that’s the essence of the sport”, comments the director of McLaren at MotorSport. “Personally, I think we could have found a compromise. »

His choice would have fallen on a V6 turbo engine, offering a reduction in displacement while retaining a characteristic sound. ?If I had the choice, I probably would have opted for a turbocharged V6 engine. More and more cars are turbo-powered. The engine structure would have corresponded to the single-seaters and we would have kept this unique sound. »
