Masashi Yamamoto: “Honda wants to show its potential”

The separation now established between McLaren and Honda at the end of the season, and the continuation of the commitment of the Japanese engine manufacturer in F1 with Toro Rosso marked the week preceding the Singapore Grand Prix.

A new page in the history of Honda in the discipline thus opens, the Japanese firm still wanting to demonstrate its capabilities with hybrid technology which has posed recurring problems since its return to F1.

« Motor racing means a lot to Honda, it's part of our DNA, comments Masashi Yamamoto, general manager of Honda Motorsport. When we started in 1948, Honda's dream was to race.

“>It is the challenge of performance and technology that drives us forward. Abandoning along the way makes no sense, it's not our mentality. We are here to progress and grow. Its very important for us.

The regulations will be stable until 2020, so we still have three years and we want to show our improvements with this technology. We want to show the potential of Honda. Obviously, Honda would have preferred to remain a partner of McLaren, but we were unable to achieve the performance and reliability targets set by the team, continues Yamamoto. This created tension between us and unfortunately separation resulted. Working with McLaren, I realized that it was a very large, very methodical company. Compare that with Toro Rosso which is a growing company. It is very important for us to work in partnership, towards the same goal. For example: if we compare the two teams with different cuisines, let's say that McLaren is a very sophisticated French cuisine. Toro Rosso is more like home cooking where you can add new ingredients. »
