Massa and Williams dominate in Barcelona

After the arrival of rain at the end of the morning, the afternoon session in Catalonia took place in milder weather, allowing to the Brazilian Felipe Massa to shine. The pilot Williams, on soft tires, set the new absolute best time in the tests held in Barcelona in 1'23″500, beating the old benchmark of Romain Grosjean, established last Sunday in 1'24″067. To this performance are added more than 100 laps completed by the former driver Ferrari.

If the end of the previous Barcelona session had been mixed for Sauber, with gearbox problems, Marcus Ericsson's C34 rose to second place this Thursday for the restart, a little less than eight tenths behind and with 122 laps on the clock, including a race simulation. The Swede is ahead of the World Champion Lewis Hamilton, who had a truncated day following a problem with the hybrid system, and more particularly with MGU-K, of its W06 Hybrid. The Briton was only able to accumulate 48 laps this morning.

Behind Hamilton, the Red Bull of Daniil Kvyat takes the Lotus of Romain Grosjean, the Ferrari of Kimi Räikkönen and the Toro Rosso de Carlos Sainz, which today released a new package, including a revised and corrected muzzle. The Spaniard also caused the second interruption of the day. Jenson Button completes the ranking after again encountering technical problems on his MP4-30, stopped by a hydraulic leak with only seven laps completed.

The second day of the Catalan tests will begin tomorrow at 9 a.m., and will be followed live on our website. The opportunity in particular to see debut the new Force India VJM08, who must take the track this Friday with the German Nico Hulkenberg.
