Mattia Binotto on Carlos Sainz: “He has to handle the pressure”

La Team Ferrari announced before the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix the extension of Carlos Sainz for two more years. The Spanish driver is now linked with his team until 2024, just like his teammate Charles Leclerc. A situation which delights Mattia Binotto, the main team of the Italian team.

“We offered Carlos two more years because we are very happy with him and he is performing well, he meets our expectations, declared the transalpine boss at a press conference in Imola. It was the right time to extend it in order to ensure stability in the stable. We have good foundations to achieve our goals in the future with our two drivers until 2024. The line-up we have is the best we can have. »

A mark of confidence in Carlos Sainz which comes despite the Madrilenian's first abandonment with the brand at Prancing Horse during a complicated Australian Grand Prix for the driver. The latter unfortunately distinguished himself by a new error in Q2 during rainy qualifying in Emilia-Romagna this Friday, condemning him to a poor tenth place on the starting grid of the sprint race, while Charles Leclerc, leader of the championship, will start in second position behind Max Verstappen (Red Bull).

"I don't think he has any problems, Mattia Binotto wanted to clarify. He just needs to adapt. He's made some big mistakes, but he's already proven he's fast and reliable. It's the first time in his career that he has a car to fight in the best positions and he has to manage this pressure. He has to use this, but he will do it quickly, because I know he is a smart boy. » The Spaniard will have to demonstrate this so as not to let the status of number 1 driver and the potential world champion title slip away on the other side of the Ferrari garage.
