McLaren still under threat of penalties

McLaren-Honda displayed rather promising reliability in post-race testing of the Red Bull Ring, the MP4-30 having completed 180 laps of the track over the two days of testing despite the rainy weather on the first day.

But the British team remains under threat of penalties for the British GP played this Sunday July 5 at Silverstone after being inflicted with a record penalty of 50 places on the grid for the Austrian GP. Certain mechanical elements on the cars of the two drivers could once again be changed.

“Fernando was involved in an accident (with Kimi Räikkönen) at Spielberg on the first lap of the race and Jenson has a sensor failure…”, recalled Yasuhisa Arai, the sporting director of Honda R&D. “We have carried out analyzes on both Power Units at the factory and we believe that Fernando’s Power Unit suffered damage following the accident. We might have to replace it. As for Jenson's issue, the issue remains under investigation. »
