McLaren makes progress on Mercedes engine integration

Six years after the end of their association, McLaren et Mercedes meet up. This time there is no question of naming but the two entities are starting again on the same bases as before. From now on, the German manufacturer is the engine supplier to the British team.

In full preparations for the 2021 season, McLaren, in addition to the development work of its car, must integrate its new powertrain into the latter. An arduous operation that seems to be going well.

« Switching to the Mercedes engine this year is obviously a big task but I must admit that I am very happy with the progress we have seen so far., recognized Andreas Seidl, director of McLaren Racing.

I would say that the assembly of the car is progressing very well. The relationship with the Brixworth and Mercedes teams also got off to a good start. There are very good dialogues and technical exchanges so I am very happy ».

With a third change of engine manufacturer in the last six years, McLaren intends to take advantage of this experience to move forward more quickly and above all to be able to focus on other details such as the chassis or even aerodynamics.

“(The powertrain change) is carried out in parallel with the aerodynamic development that we must carry out for next season, particularly at the rear of the car, continues Andreas Seidl.

I would say we are on schedule, no red lights ahead of us at the moment. Thanks to the recent engine changes at McLaren, we have gained experience in this area. We will see once in testing how we managed this situation. ».

This year, McLaren and Mercedes meet again after six years. Together, the two entities have won no less than 78 victories, three Drivers' titles and one Manufacturer's title. A good omen? See you in March.
