What if Melbourne also switched to night racing? After Singapore, Bahrain, Jeddah, Losail, Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi, the Australian Grand Prix could also soon take place in night conditions, or at least at sunset. While the land of kangaroos andOscar piastri secured its future by Formula 1 until 2037, discussions are in fact underway concerning the future scheduling of the race.

The boss of the Grand Prix indeed confirmed it during the weekend. “For the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, the preference is for a day race, explained Andrew Westacott. But what I would also say is that the state of Victoria is known for its capacity to innovate during major events. We must now look at a 15-year horizon and that is why the government considered it important to secure this long-term deal with Formula 1. Being open-minded is the best thing to do ".

Discussions in progress

Stefano Domenicali, the boss of Formula 1, has also confirmed ongoing discussions about a nighttime schedule for the race. Present on the calendar since 1996, Melbourne has the advantage of being here to stay and therefore of being able to afford possible investments which would make a night race possible.

And then… even if Europe is no longer the fashionable continent of the moment, a shift in the timetable of the Australian Grand Prix could be particularly interesting for the promoter, since this would allow a Grand Prix contested at less nighttime times and therefore less prohibitive for the audience in the Old Continent, while qualifying and the Grand Prix take place at 7 a.m. in the Central European time zone, and even at 6 a.m. in the United Kingdom.
