For his first year at Mercedes, George Russell undoubtedly expected to experience a very different situation. Ultra-competitive since the start of the hybrid era in 2014, Brackley's structure suddenly came to a halt in 2022. To everyone's surprise, the Silver Arrows were no longer as sharp as in the past. Having started too far, they still managed to make up a good part of the delay thanks to the Englishman who gave them the only pole position (Hungary) and victory (Brazil) of the year.

« Everything is relative in the end, said George Russell when taking stock of his first year at Mercedes. It still remains the best season of my career. We got a lot of podiums and I think we had a lot of very good races.."

Aware of the difficulties encountered by Mercedes in part due to the design choice of the W13, the teammate of Lewis Hamilton prefers to see the glass half full when it comes to retracing the campaign. For him, everything is not to be thrown away. Far from there ! “ There are positives to come from it (from this season), he continues. I'm not going to say it's a difficult situation, but from a performance standpoint, we're not where we want to be. But we can't just sit around sulking and getting mad at everything. » That's good, that's not what Mercedes intends to do as it demonstrated at the end of the year when it was regularly competitive. “ We did a very good job, he emphasizes. What we still lack is the time on a fast lap. » The Germans will have all winter to erase these errors in order to be immediately in the game in 2023.
