Mercedes confirms the introduction of a new engine in Montreal

Announced by Lewis Hamilton from Monaco, the second specification of the engine Mercedes will be well introduced as part of the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend. The German team, which is still undefeated in 2019 at the dawn of the 7th meeting of the year, confirmed that it would have phase 2 of its engine, with an expected performance gain.

The development will also be made available to Williams and Racing Point, the two Mercedes customer teams. Unlike Honda, Renault, and Ferrari, the German manufacturer, which largely dominates both world rankings, completed the first six Grands Prix of the season with the same engine specification.

The Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve is a demanding track for power units and has often coincided with the introduction of new units, especially as the Canadian GP marks the end of the first third of the season and only three engines are permitted per campaign and per pilot.

« The guys at our factory in Brixworth are working like crazy and we haven't had the smoothest winter on the engine front., commented Hamilton from Montreal. Well done to them because our reliability has been excellent so far.

We are constantly trying to push the limits but these hybrid engines are now six years old so it is complicated to find substantial gains like before. It's a matter of small improvements now and this phase 2 represents a new step forward ».

It is now accepted that Ferrari has the most efficient engine in terms of raw power and top speed in a straight line, which was the prerogative of Mercedes during the first years of the current V6 turbo hybrid era. Without the Scuderia managing to convert this advantage into success for the moment.

If the German team manages to regain control in this area, while maintaining its domination in the slow and medium-speed sectors, we wonder who will be able to defeat the gray armada...
