Mercedes in a better position than at Spa after the first day at Zandvoort

There is no doubt, Mercedes is doing better, or finds himself in a better performance window, on the side of the Dutch seaside resort. Despite the hopes placed in the W13 at Spa-Francorchamps last week, the weekend in the Ardennes went very badly for George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, far behind the leading group and in particular Red Bull even being more than a second behind in qualifying.

A week later, the sensations are very different on the Mercedes side. Faster, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton were able to move to the front during the first two practice sessions on Friday, the first city to even set the best time in EL1.

« It’s better than Spa! admitted George Russell, happy to have been able to reverse the trend in the space of a week. Compared to the same time last week, the car is running better, there is no doubt about it."

However, the Englishman notes that they are not the only ones to have progressed, or to have found rhythm, since Belgium. George Russell indeed underlines a tightening of the field with the appearance of other teams which also seem more efficient at Zandvoort thus fearing a big battle in qualifying. “ Saturday is going to be tight, he points. I think that McLaren are fast, even Aston Martin…Moreover, we know that qualifications are our weak point »

To remedy this, George Russell will be able to rely on the very good race pace of his W13 to aim for a finish in the top places, provided a good result in qualifying. “ I think the race will suit us betterHe says. Our pace over the long stints is solid. To do this, you will have to start from the right position because starting from 3e line it will be complicated to fight for victory or 2e place."
