Mercedes explains damage to Hamilton's car

Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) was slowed down by damage during the Australian Grand Prix in Formula 1 in Melbourne? The Briton played a good part of the opening event of the 2019 season with a damaged floor, as the mechanics discovered in the parc ferme.

James Vowles, chief strategist for the Constructors' world champion team for the past five years, explains the circumstances of this incident. “The damaged carbon was just in front of the left rear wheel. This area is aerodynamically sensitive, both for support and balance of the car. We believe this damage was caused while the car was driving on vibrators. », he reveals.

This damage is not the only data to take into account for analysis of the Englishman's second place on the Albert Park circuit. “Lewis had already spent a long stint on the medium tires after covering the pit stop of Hag (Ferrari). He had to significantly check the condition of his tires.

The damage to the floor did not help, potentially creating instability on the rear axle, more than usual. In any case, he did a fantastic job in bringing this car to the finish line.”, concludes James Vowles.
