Mercedes will play it safe on tires in Belgium

The Belgian Grand Prix, contested on August 28, will see the team Mercedes adopt a strategic approach to Pirelli tires that is much more conservative than its rivals Red Bull Racing ou Ferrari.

If the Scuderia drivers retained seven sets of super-soft tires, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg selected only four trains of the softest compound brought by the Italian manufacturer to the Ardennes. The star drivers will actually have more sets of medium tires available than the Maranello residents, who will only have four medium tires in Belgium. Mercedes will benefit from six and five sets of soft tires for Hamilton and Rosberg.

On this track where tire wear generally remains significant, the Red Bull drivers also favored super-soft tires (6 sets), but also relied on four sets of medium tires, just like Nico Rosberg and the Manor drivers. .

These observed differences should therefore offer notable differences in strategy in the race, with Scuderia Ferrari and Red Bull potentially favoring shorter, but more offensive stints.

At Haas F1 Team, Esteban Gutiérrez and Romain Grosjean made different choices.
