We had left the stable Mercedes confident of its strength at the end of February after well-conducted off-season tests on the Barcelona circuit. The only downside to the starry picture: engine reliability that could still be improved with several alerts (electrical problem and oil pressure anomaly) on the Flèches d'Argent, now adorned with a full black dress.
The Williams FW43 equipped with the same engine also had to shorten their run due to a recalcitrant MGU-K.
While Honda has already announced that Red Bull and AlphaTauri will have an engine upgrade in Austria, Mercedes confirmed to us this Thursday morning that the three teams powered by the Brixworth blocks – the factory structure, Racing Point, and Williams – will use a revised version of the German turbo V6.
Mercedes specifies that this new feature aims to improve the reliability of the powertrain and not to provide a performance gain, unlike the new version of the Japanese engine.
