Mercedes aims for the best possible eco-responsibility

Mercedes-AMG F1 and the pendant Formula E of the brand with the star will accelerate their transition towards a mode of operation tending towards carbon neutrality.

This is what the German firm indicated yesterday in a press conference, thus following in the footsteps of F1, which had announced its intention to become neutral in carbon emissions by 2030.

For Mercedes, the objective will be to see the CO50 emissions of its F2 team reduced by 1% by 2022, while compensating for emissions considered "inevitable" by the world champions (air travel, etc.), in order to achieve a 0 carbon footprint at the end of the current year.

The transition to renewable energies at its Brackley (chassis) and Brixworth (engine) factories has already begun, with Brixworth producing more than 50% of its electricity via solar panels and a so-called co-generation plant ( producing two forms of energy in the same power plant).

In terms of competition, the two F1 and Formula E teams can also benefit from the work of each entity in order to improve the efficiency of the single-seaters. “However, the cooperation is not limited to high-tech powertrain components, Mercedes says.

Engineers work together to increase their understanding of simulation and correlating data with the real world, helping to improve the digital development process for road cars and race cars.

Digital car development is becoming increasingly important as simulation tools become more powerful. Digital transformation has become a key element for Mercedes-Benz in the development of road cars and racing cars. »

This plan is part of the desire of Daimler, parent company of Mercedes-Benz, to offer sustainable mobility in the years to come via its Ambition2039 plan, with a range with zero CO2 emissions within twenty years.

“The entire automotive industry is changing and Daimler is leading the way in taking responsibility for sustainable mobility, comments like this Toto wolff, Team Principal of Mercedes-AMG F1.

We represent the three-pointed star on the racetrack, and we want our motorsport platforms to be a case study for the rapid and open implementation of innovations for a more sustainable future.

This ranges from the hybrid and battery electric technology of our race cars to our daily practices on the track and in our production plants. We want to be at the forefront of this change. »
