Mick Schumacher: “Fortunately, the safety of these cars is extremely high”

The deplorable state of the car de Mick Schumacher after the accident said a lot about the violence of the crash recorded by the German pilot. On Saturday, while trying to qualify for Q3, the son of Michael Schumacher lost the rear of his car and violently hit the wall. The impact was extremely violent. Immediately rescued by the marshals, he was fortunately able to get out of his car but did not escape being airlifted to the hospital for examinations which fortunately revealed nothing.

Present in the mixed zone this Sunday at 16 p.m., the German wanted to reassure about his condition. “Fortunately, safety in these cars has been extremely high these days, so I was able to escape unscathed. When I felt that I was losing the rear, I prepared myself for the shock, I knew it would come. Before moving, in the car, I wanted to make sure everything was okay. It was a big shock, yes. From what I heard, I was going around 270 km/h when I hit the wall. I think in a road car it would have gone badly.”

«After the crash I was frustrated»

Invited to give his opinion on the route and its dangerousness, the protégé of Ferrari confirmed that changes might be welcome. “It is not up to me to judge whether the route is safe or not. It's up to the officials to do it and the people responsible for the decision, but I imagine that at some point, we will have to look into the question yes.

The champion of Formula 2 seemed especially disappointed not to be able to ride this Sunday, Haas having decided to only field the car of Kevin Magnussen. “I would have been ready to start today, but we have to manage our pieces as best we can. This is only the second race, so replacement parts are not plentiful at this time of year. Deep down, I imagined it would be difficult to ride, but I still hoped for it” confided Mick Schumacher.

The Haas driver also recalled what went through his mind at the time of the crash, and confirmed that he did not lose consciousness. “I was 100%. After the crash, I was frustrated and annoyed with what happened. I was mainly thinking about how I could have avoided it or how I could have done things differently”. The German will be back in the car in Melbourne in two weeks for the third Grand Prix of the season.
