Mick Schumacher promoted to F1 with Haas in 2021

The name Schumacher is back in Formula 1. Like AUTOhebdo announced it in its Number 2283 dated October 21, 2020, Mick Schumacher will therefore be promoted to Formula 1 next season within the team Haas

The German driver is currently leading the championship Formula 2 at a meeting at the end of the season. The son of the seven-time F1 world champion Michael Schumacher will support the Russian Nikita Mazepin confirmed Tuesday by the American team. He has a multi-year contract with the US structure.

Haas will therefore field a new duo of rookies to replace Kevin Magnussen et Romain Grosjean, who left the Bahrain military hospital this Wednesday morning, 3 days after his terrible accident at the start of the Bahrain GP.

At 21, Mick Schumacher is preparing to make his big debut in the premier category, 30 years after his illustrious father. The one who raced under the name “Betsch”, the surname of his mother Corinna, in his early days, has since embraced the name and colossal heritage of his father.

Mick started in single-seaters in 2015 with the Dutch team Van Amersfoort Racing in the German Formula 4 championship. Author of a victory and 2 podiums, he finished in a modest 10th place in the standings and returned for a 2nd season in the same series, this time with Prema. He also entered Italian Formula 4 and finished vice-champion in both categories.

In 2017, it climbed Formula 3 Europe where he also took a season to get his bearings before playing and winning the title in 2018.

Logically promoted to Formula 2, still with Prema, in 2019, his first season was once again honest if not spectacular with a victory in Hungary and a 12th place in the Drivers' standings. At the beginning of that year, he also joined the Ferrari Driver Academy, which notably revealed Charles Leclerc.

After the start of the 2020 campaign, Schumacher accelerated from mid-season to take control of a hotly contested championship. With one weekend remaining, he is 14 points ahead of Briton Callum Ilott with 2 victories and 10 podiums.

« I am convinced that Mick earned the right to enter Formula 1 on merit, commented Guenther Steiner, Haas team principal. He won races, scored podiums, and excelled against very tough competition in 2020 ».

Schumacher has already had the opportunity to drive in Formula 1. He took part in the post-2019 Bahrain Grand Prix tests with Ferrari and Alfa Romeo. He should normally have driven with the Hinwil team in Free Practice 1 of the Eifel Grand Prix at the Nürburgring at the beginning of October but the weather prevented him from doing so.

« I am very happy and speechless to join the Formula 1 grid, commented Mick. I would like to thank Haas, Ferrari, and the Ferrari Driver Academy for their trust. I also thank my parents from the bottom of my heart, I know that I owe them everything. I have always believed in my dream of Formula 1. Thanks also to all the fans who have supported me since my debut ».

Schumacher will have a first glimpse of his new environment from Free Practice 1 of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix where he will be in action on Friday December 11. He will return 4 days later for the rookie test organized in Yas Marina (December 15).
