Monza wants to invest for the future and could change its route

2022 will mark an important date for the Monza route with the centenary of the construction of the circuit designed near Milan. One of the last “giants” of the calendar F1, present since the beginnings of the World Championship in the 50s, which intends to undergo a makeover on this occasion.

It is in the columns of our colleagues from the Gazzetta dello Sport that Angelo Sticchi Damiani, president of the Automobile Club of Italy, discusses certain investment avenues, which could reach the sum of 100 million euros.

In terms of track design, the legendary transalpine circuit could thus lose one of its first two chicanes. The first had been regularly used in different forms from the 70s, the second being introduced in the mid-90s. Another possibility of modification: a redesign of the second turn of Lesmo, reworked to meet the new safety standards imposed following the Ayrton Senna's accident at Imola in 1994.

Monza is yet another exception on another point, namely the width of the track. Regulatory set at 12m by the FIA, this could constitute another area of work for the Italian authorities.
