Max Mosley will therefore not stand for re-election as head of the FIA next October. The president in office for 16 years, who initially announced that he wanted to step down at the end of his mandate before, it seems, turning around, finally made the necessary decision. In a letter sent to all members of the FIA, the Briton explains his decision and does not intend to reconsider it.
« From a personal point of view, it would be very difficult for me to change my mind and represent myself », he writes. Mosley explains that he is stepping down while he expects new Concordes agreements to be signed. These will thus allow the Formula 1 to welcome new teams and continue to reduce costs.
Finally regarding his possible successor, Max Mosley clearly designates his favorite in the person of Jean Todt. “ I believe that the goals of those who supported me can be accomplished if you elect a strong, competent and experienced team. A team that will maintain the independence of the FIA. (?) I think the person who could lead this team is Jean Todt ", he says.
At present, only Ari Vatanen has formalized his candidacy for the election which will be held on October 23. We could therefore be heading towards a Todt-Vatanen duel, unless a third candidate appears.
