Mosley takes care of his exit

Max Mosley, after sixteen years as president of the FIA, will hand over the reins. Indeed, his successor will be known after the vote which must take place on October 23. The Briton thus wished to take stock of his presidency in a three-page letter – discussed here in a non-exhaustive manner – addressed to the leaders of motorsport.

The president of the FIA talks in particular about his record regarding safety, his hobby horse during the 90s. “ At the start of my presidency in 1994, we lost Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger. Their deaths led to a fundamental reassessment of safety at all levels of motorsport. We have set up a research group responsible for finding constant innovation and renewing safety requirements. »

Max Mosley then recalls the different points worked on to improve driving safety: “ better head and neck protection, HANS system, better harnesses, resistant helmets, survival cells", leading to "a considerable improvement in safety ».

The Briton, while he recognizes that his last mandate was not spared from difficulties, believes that the FIA has managed to remain credible. Max Mosley notably had a word on the ?crashgate? affair. of Singapore in 2008, when Nelson Piquet Jr intentionally crashed. “ We were able to witness an extraordinary plot to deliberately destroy a car in a race. There was controversy but the manufacturer concerned took action and the truth was quickly established. It is always difficult, but these problems must be dealt with decisively if the Formula 1 wants to remain credible. »

« I wish my successor and his entire team the best for the future », writes the current president to conclude his missive. “ I hope that, modestly, by becoming a member of the Senate and the Foundation, I will be able to continue to stay in contact with the clubs and with the new leaders of the FIA. But I will only give my opinion if asked. The time has come for me to step back and move on to a calmer life. »
