Newey: engines have become too important

While F1 is studying ways to improve F1 from 2017, the designer of Red Bull Racing Adrian Newey has expressed concern over the dominance of Mercedes F1 which is explained by the importance of Power Units in the performance of single-seaters.

“We have to find a good balance between the chassis, the engine and the driver for the discipline to be competitive. Engines currently have too much space and this is unhealthy”, commented the British engineer in The Hindu.

The frustration is all the greater for Red Bull Racing as its performance was significantly down last year. The Milton Keynes team was the source of serious tensions with its engine manufacturer Renault which will provide it with a 6l turbo/hybrid V1.6 rebadged by Tag Heuer.

“Cosworth arrived in 1967 with a winning engine which was used exclusively by the Lotus team. It quickly became apparent that this engine was going to be a cut above. Lotus has agreed to break its exclusivity for the good of the sport. Unfortunately, that kind of attitude doesn't seem to exist anymore. If discipline isn't healthy, what's the point of winning? », asks Adrian Newey who clarified that the domination of Red Bull Racing between 2010 and 2013 can be explained by a set of elements.
