To the already crazy scenario of the qualifying session for the Hungarian Grand Prix in the afternoon, the Hungarian evening could well offer an alternative ending to the thriller of the last round of Q3. For memory, Fernando Alonso (McLaren) made a mistake during the last part of the qualifying session, forcing several drivers including Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) to cut their effort in their last lap.
Only Nico Rosberg initially seemed spared by the yellow flags displayed, and improved his time to beat Hamilton and take a pole that we still know is important on the Budapest turnstile.
But the on-board camera images nevertheless showed that the German had passed well while the yellow flag was still indicated. If the championship leader had claimed to have “taken his foot off enough”, doubt remained even if the FIA had not yet launched an investigation.
It was finally at 19:16 p.m. that the stewards indicated that the resident of the star stable was placed under investigation for a potential violation of Appendix H, Article 2.4.5.1.b of the Sporting Code, namely not having slowed down under yellow flag.
We now have to wait for the decision of the college of commissioners.
