Lando Norris was the only motorized runner by Mercedes not having yet taken a 4th thermal engine synonymous with a grid penalty. It is no longer the case.
The 21-year-old Briton has just joined the Étoile factory riders, the racers Aston Martin, and his teammate Daniel Ricciardo in the camp of those who have exceeded their annual quota.
Norris joins Yuki tsunoda (Alpha Tauri), Lance stroll (Aston Martin), and George Russell (Williams) among the drivers who will have to step back on the Mexico grid on Sunday.
We can still question the relevance of having such engine restrictions with 22 races on the calendar, expecting 23 next year. No one seems able to meet the annual quotas as Norris becomes the 15th driver penalized out of 20 this season. Only runners Alfa Romeo et Haas, all 4 powered by Ferrari, and Esteban Ocon (Alpine-Renault) have escaped punishment for the moment.
In any case, this is not good news for McLaren, which is only 3,5 points ahead of Ferrari in the fight for 3rd place in the Constructors' championship and has been stalling against the Scuderia for two races.
