The victory of Max Verstappen in the rain in Brazil, or rather his defeat against the Dutchman, had caused a certain bitterness among Lando NorrisSixth at the finish after a chaotic Grand Prix, during which he was caught out, the Englishman did not hide his frustration, believing that the world champion's success was above all due to luck and not natural talent.
« I don't care what people say. Not pitting was the wrong thing to do. A red flag shouldn't have happened, but the crash ended up causing one. That's life. Sometimes you take a gamble and it paid off for them. It's not talent, it's just luck., he said at the time. We were just unlucky. (…) You can change your tyres under a red flag, that's what the others did, so it's just unlucky. Sometimes things go your way »
At the time, Lando Norris' exit had caused a lot of noise, with some believing that he was not a good loser while Max Verstappen had signed one of his best performances of his career. Aware of the turn that this took, the vice-world champion wanted to return to the subject to put an end to any controversy.
« First of all, I want to retract my comment in which I said “only luck, no talent“., has explained the pilot McLaren at the FIA prize-giving ceremony in Kigali (Rwanda).
First of all, I want to congratulate Max. What he did this year, in Brazil… It was incredible. I am the first to admit something like that when I am the one who is facing him. It was a very difficult season. I gave my best and I tried to put up the best possible fight, but it was not enough this year. At the same time, I am sometimes happy to finish second behind Max, because I think it is a real achievement to do much better than that. So it is a wonderful year for me. A lot of achievements, improvements from me… But I also know that I have to go up a level and do more than what I did this year.. » The appointment is made for 2025.

I don't think that trying to appease Verstappen is of any use. As for this Brazilian GP, I rather believe that given the track conditions, it was not luck that a red flag came, but an obvious fact.

Apart from the Norris/Verstappen debate, the English media are uncompromising towards Max.

What should we think of this statement which came late and during the FIA closing ceremony in Kigali? Reality mea culpa or so British hypocrisy?
