It was the other great British performance in qualifying. Lando Norris will start from the second row on Sunday, for the Hungarian Grand Prix. Qualified 4th, the driver McLaren achieved his second best performance of the season in Q3 (3rd in Imola, 4th in Australia). Above all, Norris managed to outclass both Alpine, who will start just behind on the third row.

Relieved and happy with his performance, Lando Norris especially kept the pace of the McLaren, very close to the best on the Hungaroring. “I am very happy with this 4th place, I did not expect to be in front of both Red Bull. I am also surprised by the gap with Ferrari. Two tenths behind Charles is not much when you know that they have a much faster car. It was a good lap and I did a good job. »

The Briton did not fail to congratulate his compatriot and friend George Russell, while ironizing about the communication of Mercedes. “Surprised by George [Russell’s] pole, he was very fast. But I saw from Q1 that they looked fast. So all the “talk” yesterday [Friday] was rubbish! I'm a little surprised but they did a good job. George drives well, so congratulations to him. (…) We start in a good position tomorrow, so we will try to continue. »

Norris wants to try to battle with the Ferraris

With this 4th place, McLaren achieved its best qualification in Hungary since 2012 and the pole position of Lewis Hamilton at the time. Fast since FP1 both on a timed lap and in race pace, Lando Norris would like to look ahead rather than behind for the Grand Prix. “The Mercedes are faster than us, George is 4 tenths faster than me. They're not going to be any slower tomorrow. I think we can have a good race, I can even battle with the people in front of me. I don't know if I'll have a chance but we can try. But the main competitors will be behind me, so as long as I can stay ahead, I'll be happy! »
