Intriguing “new mode” on the Mercedes steering system

As he takes down the straights of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya during the second day of 2020 winter testing, Lewis Hamilton pulls on the steering wheel of your W11, its movement has the immediate consequence of a tightening of the toe-in and/or camber of the front wheels of the car

The striking images were captured by the six-time world champion's on-board camera and spread like wildfire across a paddock. F1 always looking for fresh intrigue after a winter of hibernation.

So what is the effect sought by this trick which affects the geometry of the suspension? Is the system even legal? Approached by AUTOhebdo, Mercedes is content to admit that there is indeed “ a new mode in our steering system this season ". The German manufacturer will not say more officially for the moment.

The lawyers among us quickly mentioned article 10.2.3 of the F1 technical regulations, which clearly states that “ no adjustments can be made to any suspension system while the car is in motion ».

The preceding article further states that “ any motorized system capable of modifying the configuration or performance of any suspension element is prohibited ».

In response, the Mercedes team pointed out to us that it would not have invested so much effort to design an illegal concept. However, we will remember that last year Renault had been caught and penalized for an automated brake distribution system spotted by Racing Point on on-board camera images.

Business to follow therefore, especially since the technical director of Étoile, James Allison, is expected at a press conference at 13:30 p.m. on the Barcelona side with Hamilton.
