Aerodynamic innovations for Mercedes and Renault at Suzuka

The 2019 campaign may only have five rounds, including the Japanese Grand Prix, but that does not stop the teams from continuing to introduce developments on their cars.

A choice not as surprising as that when we know that the 2020 technical regulations vary little compared to the current specifications. Additionally, the teams will no doubt devote a lot of energy and attention to their 2021 plans quite early next year.

Toto wolff, boss of Mercedes, announced in the previous round in Sochi, the W10 of the five-time world champions includes some new features on Japanese soil, starting with revised and corrected side deflectors along the sidepods.

« In theory, evolution should bring us performance, commented Valtteri Bottas. We will see to what extent this materializes on the track but the simulations suggest that it is a fairly honest step forward when compared to other new aerodynamics. ».

Enough to compete with Ferrari supersonic since the end of the summer break? Bottas and his teammate Lewis Hamilton doubt it but they will still try to complete the Manufacturers' championship this weekend at Suzuka. Mercedes must score 14 points more than Ferrari to secure a 6th title in a row on Sunday.

As for Renault, the R.S.19 will be equipped with a new front wing, supposed to provide more grip and support according to the technical director ofenstone Nick Chester. Nico Hulkenberg, who has learned to remain cautious about the chassis developments made by Renault, declared that he wanted to wait for the verdict of the clock before deciding on the potential gains of the development.
