New Ferrari engines for Sauber and Haas in Hungary

As with the previous engine evolution of the Prancing Horse, the Team decided to make its new model available in advance to Sauber and Haas, which had benefited from phase 2 in Monaco when Ferrari later introduced it to Canada for its factory team.

« It's engine number 3, which is a little bit different: it's positive even if the Hungaroring is not the most demanding in this regard, confirmed Romain Grosjean. We also introduce it here to see if there are cooling or other problems and rectify the situation between here Spa and Monza where power plays a preponderant role. We did the same in Monaco to prepare for Canada and Paul Ricard which followed. It was planned from the start. We are on our roadmap ».

In addition to a 3rd internal combustion engine (ICE), Kevin Magnussen, Marcus Ericsson, and Charles Leclerc will also use new turbos and MGU-H, while Grosjean is on a different cycle. No driver is subject to a grid penalty as they all remain within the 2018 allocation (3 copies of each above-mentioned element allowed) for the moment.

Asked whether Sauber and Haas were serving as laboratory rats for the parent company in terms of engine development, Grosjean answered in the negative.

« Ferrari has the infrastructure and manufactures the engines so they can know what the developments will do on their car, explains the Frenchman from Haas. We are customers so when they give us new parts, even though they have all the predictions, with our car it may not correspond exactly so we have to take a little more precaution to adapt . They don't have our data so they don't know exactly what our needs are in terms of cooling, etc. »
