Nyck de Vries has only six starts in Formula 1, but that doesn't stop him from having already gone through all the emotions. Hero last September in Monza where he offered Williams points (9th) while he competed in his first Grand Prix as a joker (after the appendicitis suffered by Alex Albon) and without preparation, the world champion of Formula E must now fight to keep its place in the premier category. At the house of Alpha Tauri, the Dutchman was started but made a series of mistakes, notably during the last two Grands Prix in Baku and Miami.

To the point that Helmut Marko, the special advisor of Red Bull, did not hesitate to put pressure on him, some media even suggest that the Austrian would have given him an ultimatum, while Liam Lawson, member of the Red Bull Junior Team, shines in Japan in Super Formula where he is currently in the lead of the championship. In Monaco, the native of Sneek in the Netherlands took responsibility. “I really think I made too many mistakes, I'm human, I admit it openly,” he said during a media session on Thursday.

“I also believe that my pace has been competitive at several points, which encourages me and gives me confidence. It also proves to me that the potential is there and I personally believe that it is only a matter of time for things to fall into place.” He pursues. “Likewise, I made too many mistakes to turn my good pace into a result, but that's part of the learning process. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. We are all human, we make mistakes and we move forward”. Nyck ultimately asks for nothing other than a little time.

“The learning is very broad…how you build a weekend, how you go through the different fuel levels, the different tire compounds, the different engine modes and the changing circumstances of the track… Starting with three street circuits, it's just... all these things combined... It's not just one aspect that makes it difficult, but I think putting it all together, it's not simple, but it's our job and I try to give the best of myself.

Asked about his future and the rumors about the potential loss of his seat, De Vries preferred to smile. “I'm really sorry to all the media outlets that spend time and effort writing these things, but I was at my piano, taking lessons and going to the gym”. The Batavian must absolutely take advantage of Monaco (May 28) and Barcelona (June 4) to raise the bar.
